Do You Believe?
October 6th, 2009

I remember hearing this slogan on Canadian television last year talking about the possibility of Canadian dominance at the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

I must admit, when I heard it, I thought sometimes “no”. lol. Think about it, Canadians have already had two Olympics in their country and how many gold medals do they have? NONE!

And yet, they’ve been running winter sporting programs called “own the podium” and television campaigns asking “do you believe”.

Here’s the point.

Canadians could easily have looked at their past results and had a promotion saying “maybe we could win just one gold!”. Funny but true, because this is what most of us do in life. We look at previous results and let them dictate what we expect of the future. If Canadians believed that past results dictated the future, they’d be committing sporting suicide. We all know that.

And yet, when it comes to ourselves, we make excuses about our own expectations.

Another one of those human traits I guess *sighs*.

So where to from here? Well, firstly, cheer on a few Canadians as the do “own the podium” in Canada as their athletes think only of the future and winning gold for their country rather than looking to the disappointments of the past. Second, cheer for the Aussies, because I’m a bloody proud one and I love seeing them own the world sporting stage.

Third, look at something in your own life that happened in the past that dictates how you feel about future achievement and disregard it. Throw it out and replace it with the thought that you are going to “own the (podium)” and replace podium with your area of choice.

It’s not too late, your not too old. Go out there and get it!

Throw Out Your TV
October 4th, 2009

Ha, ha… got you! You thought from the title that I was going to suggest what so many other personal development “guru’s” are saying and for you to throw your tv out so you can’t watch it!

Well, it’s almost true.

But first, why is it that so many “guru’s” tell you to turn off, or throw out the television, yet in the same talk, tell you about an inspiring sporting moment (from the television), or an amazing interview (that was on the television)? BECAUSE THEY WATCH TELEVISION!

Here’s the point though. They don’t sit in front of it like you do, flicking the channels until they find something that remotely looks familiar to entertainment.

Why am I going on about this today?

Because for the last month, I haven’t had a television. Admittedly, not by my own designs, but because the aerial is broken.

It has been amazing! I mean, I didn’t consider myself as one who watched much television anyway, but I really had so many habits based around it. I turned it on to fill a time gap where I was waiting for something else to happen, or I turned it on while I was eating, or I watched a bit to relax at night. You know the story, right?

So here I am one month on and how has it changed me? Well, I’m certainly more productive work wise. I have no tv, so to fill time I often sit in front of the computer and do work.

My wife gets a better night sleep when she has to start early for work, because when she gets home, there’s no television to turn on and keep her awake for that extra hour or so.

I’ve written far more clear goals.

I’ve started on a new business plan.

I’ve planned three physical activities and organised sporting events each week (not to mention a few others with friends).

I’m making more money than I have in a long time!

And guess what… I STILL AM ABLE TO WATCH TV!

But, but, but… “you said you had no tv”. Right! But the internet is a wonderful thing! The difference is that I never sit through ads, if I watch an episode of a show, I can pick the exact episode (by the way, did you know almost one third of a television show is ads!), if there’s important news, it’s always online, if there’s a big interview I can watch that and I can LIVE STREAM all the major sporting events I need if I really want!

Easy.

But here’s the test. I get a television back this week. Can I resist the urge to watch? I think so. My life has been way too good and too much fun to change anything now! Find out what happens here at VIP Success Club - The Ultimate Online Personal Development Resource Library and Community.

How about that eh? Cadel Evans is the Men’s cycling road race world champion.

I know Cadel may appear to some to be a little “different” in the peleton, but if you peel the layers back, you must admit he is nothing short of one eyed focused and doesn’t care what you think anyway!

For a man who has dedicated his entire life to the sport and been as passionate about it as anyone on the planet, it’s a massive reward that is so well deserved.

But when you dream of such a goal for so long, you visualise that moment, how on earth would it feel to actually capture that moment? Only Cadel himself could answer that.

For Cadel and his wife Chiara, this is such a super reward for all the hard work, sacrifice and dreaming.

Makes me wonder how big I can dream as well. It doesn’t get any bigger than the title of “World Champion”!

It’s true. So they say.

Infact I heard a quote from Charlie Tremendous Jones that says something like… “In ten years from now, the person you’ll be will be as a direct result of the people you meet and the books you read.”

So I guess I better start reading some good stuff.

I actually went back last week to the book that started it all for me. “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” is not only an entertaining read, but a textbook of sorts to get started. The funny thing is, that I had no idea how far off track I’d become since I first, second, third etc read it.

So, hopefully this time it is my compass to get me back on course and things should start working their way up!

It’s That Time Of Year Again!
September 19th, 2009

Ahhh, September. Footy finals here in Australia and a multitude of sport all around the planet.

We have the cricket coming to an end in the UK, the Vuelta Espana in the cycling and countless other events to keep every sports hungry fanatic glued to the living room sofa.

My team? Gone. No more. We made the semi-finals (limped in is a better term), only to be thwarted in the first week to start thinking about 2010.

Who to support now? Anyone? I just love watching great sport, period.

Plenty of issues to discuss at the moment. Freddy Flintoff becoming a free agent in the cricket is interesting. To be honest, I think many other players will follow suit. The attraction for playing any sport for your country would have to be a big thing for any athlete, but if you can get ten times (or even more) money for being a free agent, I would have no interest what-so-ever if I had to choose one or the other. Sure, it’s an opportunity lost, but as a professional sportsman, you have only a few years at the peak of your ability before you have to figure out how to spend the majority of your life once you retire.

Smart financial sense to take the cash!

Will this sort of thing happen in other sports? Well, for my favourite sport, it already does. Rugby League is happy to watch its players get poached by other sports, because it can’t match the money. Why would you even be loyal to a sport you love that you’ve been playing all your life, when you can get a 50% pay rise to try something new.

If it doesn’t work out, you can always go back to the original plan, right?

What would you do?

I know where I would be! Playing quoits if it meant the best income!

Where To Go, What To Do?
September 8th, 2009

Almost every person dreams of their next vacation or holiday. The question often is where should I go and what should I do.

There are always many factors to consider including time, money, logistics and travel companions. We don’t always make the right choices either.

I guess the most important thing to remember is that a more traveled person has a greater view of the world. Visiting locations for children often give them a better head start for school. In essence, travel opens your eyes.

Ideally, everyone should have the opportunity to see as much of the world as possible, but we all know this is just not going to be possible. So for now, just concentrate on yourself. Plan a trip. It doesn’t have to be to the other side of the planet flying first class, it could just be to a camping spot you have never been only a short drive from your home.

Get out. See the world. Love life.

What Other People Think
August 31st, 2009

One of my biggest downfalls in life is always being concerned about what others think of me.

It’s something I’m working on, but it is definitely a work in progress.

I remember someone said to me many years ago that even though people spend so much time wondering what other people think, the chances are, no one else is thinking about them at all. And even if they are, they probably only thought about you for a nano second and made a decision based on that.

Ridiculous isn’t it. Why oh why oh why.

So the lesson is that we should spend less time worrying what other people think and more time thinking about how we can make ourselves better.

Sounds so simple doesn’t it. So why is it that I haven’t figured it out? A bit slow? lol

Is it just me, or does anyone else think mobile broadband is a rip off unless you sign a contract.

Well, uncle Pete has come across a little loop hole hasn’t he!

If there’s one thing I hate more than being ripped off, it’s being ripped off when there is a better deal out there.

You see, I didn’t want to commit to a plan for my mobile broadband as I have no idea where I’ll be living and when I do settle, I will most likely opt for a faster and cheaper fixed connection.

For now though, there is not much choice.

Here I was thinking that I would have to pay $10 to $15 per gig of broadband, just to have the luxury of no contract, when I stumbled across a far better way.

You see three mobile actually has a deal where you can pay the same for your broadband with no contract if you just fork out the up front cost of the modem ($129 and up).

And here’s the great thing, you can cancel anytime, then re-start the connection in a few days with a phone call and a new sim card.

By the way, this is not a paid ad in any way, I just thought it was cool.

So why can’t you find this in store or on line??? Why do you think???

The only way I could find that you could get this deal was to call three directly on 1300 734 212 and go from there. If they ask, I found the deal on “the age” website.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Pets In Children’s Lives
August 26th, 2009

I remember growing up that we had at one stage four cats.

Before I was born, the family also had a dog.

So what? Well, I remember reading something many years ago that stated that children growing up with pets become more balanced later in life.

Hard to believe, huh?

It wasn’t until this last weekend that I was in Brisbane visiting my niece and nephew that I really got to see how the interaction works. They have a dog and a cat.

To watch the children play with the animals, though also have to take an element of responsibility was something that lacked in other areas of their lives. Sure they have their toys, but the responsibility and care just isn’t there at the end of the day because there are no consequences.

Every day, the non verbal communication between the young ones and the animals teach both how to interact in harmony and although sometimes they need reminding how frail a kitten can be, most of the learning is done themselves.

Is this applicable to every family? Once again, I have no idea. I will tell you one thing though, when I have children, they will certainly have pets too!

Sydney Weather In Winter?
August 18th, 2009

Ok, confession. I always have a laugh at people who talk about the weather because it generally means they have very little else to talk about, right?

Well, in Sydney this winter, it has been a topic of conversation by its own rights.

On Sunday, Sydney reached almost 30 degrees celcius and we are still officially in winter. Unheard of? Well, actually not quite, the record stands at over 30 degrees set in 1995, but we weren’t too far off.

But it’s not just that one day that stands out.

May and June saw deep low pressure systems form off the coast and Sydney’s coastline got pounded by rain for almost six weeks. The sad part was that very little made it inland enough to fall in the catchment area of our dams.

Then after this spell, it has been nothing but glorious day after glorious day! Not only this, the average temperatures for this time of year are up a couple of degrees.

Beautiful weather, but what about all that stuff about climate change that Al Gore spruiks?

There is no question there is something very weird going on with the weather here in Sydney at the moment. But for now, I guess we should just enjoy the beautiful sunshine and spring like days.
